Mentor Summary

Mentor, Kentucky is a small unincorporated community located in the western part of the state, in the county of McCreary. It is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest. The population of Mentor was estimated to be around 200 people in 2000.

History

Mentor was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “Mentor’s Station”, and was named after the nearby Mentor’s Station Post Office. The post office was established in 1845, and the town was officially incorporated in 1848.
The town was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were corn, wheat, and tobacco. In the late 1800s, the town began to grow and develop, and a number of businesses were established. These included a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a gristmill.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline, and many of the businesses closed. However, in the late 1940s, the town began to experience a resurgence, and a number of new businesses opened. These included a grocery store, a hardware store, and a gas station.
