Loretto Summary

Loretto is a small town located in Marion County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Rolling Fork River, about 25 miles south of Louisville. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Loretto is located at 37°41'25" North, 85°25'17" West (37.690278, -85.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

History

Loretto was founded in 1812 by Father Stephen Badin, a French priest who was the first Catholic priest ordained in the United States. He named the town after the Italian town of Loreto, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared. The town was incorporated in 1820.
The town was a major stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and was home to a large tobacco warehouse. The town was also home to a large Catholic seminary, St. Meinrad's Seminary, which was founded in 1854.

Economy

The economy of Loretto is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its tobacco, corn, and soybean production.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 662.2 per square mile (255.7/km2).
