Jeffersontown Summary
Jeffersontown, Kentucky is a city located in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. It is a suburb of Louisville and is part of the Louisville Metro area. The population was 26,595 at the 2010 census.
History
Jeffersontown was founded in 1780 by Colonel William Pope and named after Thomas Jefferson. It was originally a farming community and was known as Pope’s Station. In 1868, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was built through the area, and the town was renamed Jeffersontown. The town was incorporated in 1871.
In the early 20th century, Jeffersontown was a popular destination for wealthy Louisvillians who wanted to escape the city. The area was known for its horse farms and country estates.
Geography
Jeffersontown is located at 38°14′N 85°37′W (38.23, -85.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.
Economy
Jeffersontown is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Ford Motor Company, UPS, and the University of Louisville.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 26,595 people, 10,845 households, and 7,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,231.2 people per square mile (1,245.3/km2). There were 11,717 housing units at an average density of 1,427.2 per square mile (552.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
