Hodgenville Summary

Hodgenville is a small city located in LaRue County, Kentucky, United States. It is the county seat of LaRue County and is located in the heart of the state. The population was 2,206 at the 2010 census. It is the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.

History

Hodgenville was founded in 1779 by Thomas Hodgen, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1836. It was the first town in LaRue County and was the county seat from its founding until 1843, when it was moved to nearby Buffalo. In 1876, the county seat was moved back to Hodgenville.
Hodgenville is best known as the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln was born in a log cabin near Hodgenville on February 12, 1809. The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site is located in Hodgenville and is a popular tourist attraction.

Hodgenville is located in central LaRue County at 37°33'25" North, 85°45'25" West (37.556944, -85.756944). It is situated in the rolling hills of the Knobs region of Kentucky. The city is located along the Nolin River, a tributary of the Green River.
