History
Hodgenville was founded in 1779 by Thomas Hodgen, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1836. It was the first town in LaRue County and was the county seat from its founding until 1843, when it was moved to nearby Buffalo. In 1876, the county seat was moved back to Hodgenville.
Hodgenville is best known as the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln was born in a log cabin near Hodgenville on February 12, 1809. The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site is located in Hodgenville and is a popular tourist attraction.
Geography
Hodgenville is located in central LaRue County at 37°33'25" North, 85°45'25" West (37.556944, -85.756944). It is situated in the rolling hills of the Knobs region of Kentucky. The city is located along the Nolin River, a tributary of the Green River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 890 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
