History

Highland Heights was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Highland, Ohio. The city was incorporated in 1910.
The city was named for its location on a hill overlooking the Ohio River. The city was originally known as "Highland Station" because of its proximity to the railroad station.

Economy

Highland Heights is home to several large employers, including the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and the Cincinnati Zoo. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,903 people, 2,541 households, and 1,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,664.2 people per square mile (1,030.2/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 1,213.2 per square mile (468.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 19.7% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $63,958. Males had a median income of $41,919 versus $30,917 for females.
