History

Flemingsburg was founded in 1798 by Colonel George Fleming, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1817. The town was originally located on the banks of the Licking River, but was moved to its current location in 1820 due to flooding.
Flemingsburg was an important stop on the Maysville and Lexington Turnpike, which was a major route for settlers heading west. The town was also a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in the North.
