Flatwoods Summary
Flatwoods is a city located in Greenup County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,423 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 287,702. New definitions from February 28, 2013 placed the population at 363,000.
History
Flatwoods was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Russell. The town was named for the flat terrain of the area. The first post office was established in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Flatwoods was a thriving coal mining town. The coal industry declined in the early 20th century, and the town's population began to decline.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.90% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 3,072 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
