Edmonton Summary
Edmonton is a city located in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, United States. It is the county seat of Metcalfe County and is located in the south-central part of the state. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Edmonton is located at 37°10'25" North, 85°45'45" West (37.173611, -85.762500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.
History
Edmonton was founded in 1867 by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The town was named after Edmonton, Canada, which was the hometown of one of the railroad's directors. The town was incorporated in 1872.
The town was the site of a major battle during the Civil War. On December 15, 1862, Confederate forces under General John Hunt Morgan attacked the town, which was defended by Union forces under Colonel John T. Wilder. The battle lasted for several hours, with the Union forces eventually retreating.
Economy
Edmonton is a small town with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,417.3 people per square mile (546.7/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 645.4 per square mile (249.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,000, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 15.2% of families and 18.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
