Dover Summary

Dover is a small city located in Mason County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio. The population of Dover was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Dover was first settled in 1790 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was originally known as "Crossing" due to its location at the crossing of the Ohio River and the Licking River. The town was renamed Dover in 1817, after the English city of Dover.
In 1820, Dover was incorporated as a city. The city was a major port on the Ohio River, and was a major center for the production of tobacco and hemp. The city was also a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in the North.
In the late 19th century, Dover was a major center for the production of iron and steel. The city was home to several large iron and steel mills, including the Dover Iron and Steel Company, which was founded in 1883.
