Cold Spring Summary

Spring is a small city located in Campbell County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 10 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio. The population was 4,929 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Cold Spring was first settled in 1790 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Cold Springs”, but the name was changed to “Cold Spring” in 1818. The town was incorporated in 1867.
The town was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, and was home to several prominent abolitionists, including John Rankin and Levi Coffin. Rankin was a Presbyterian minister who helped many slaves escape to freedom. Coffin was a Quaker who provided shelter and assistance to escaped slaves.
The town was also the site of a major Civil War battle in 1862. The Battle of Cold Spring was fought between Union and Confederate forces, and resulted in a Union victory.

Geography

Cold Spring is located at 39°2′25″N 84°25′17″W (39.040278, -84.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Cold Spring is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several large manufacturing companies, including the Cold Spring Brewing Company, which produces beer and other beverages. The city is also home to several retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,929 people, 1,945 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,817.3 people per square mile (1,475.2/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 1,611.5 per square mile (621.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $41,944 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
