Clay City Summary

Clay City is a small city located in Powell County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Kentucky River, and is the county seat of Powell County. The population of Clay City was 1,092 at the 2010 census.

History

Clay City was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Clay County, Kentucky. The town was named after the county, and was originally known as Clay Court House. The town was incorporated in 1872, and the first post office was established in 1873.
Clay City was a major stop on the Kentucky Central Railroad, which ran from Lexington to Covington. The railroad was completed in 1881, and it brought a great deal of economic growth to the area. The railroad also allowed Clay City to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.
The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Baptist Church, and the Presbyterian Church.

Geography

Clay City is located at 37°51'45"N, 83°45'45"W (37.8624, -83.7625). The city is situated along the banks of the Kentucky River, and is the county seat of Powell County.

Clay City's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to a number of farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of tobacco, corn, and hay.
The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Clay City Museum, the Clay City Opera House, and the Clay City Historic District. The city is also home to a number of restaurants, shops, and other businesses.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,203.3 people per square mile (464.7/km2).
