History

The area that is now Campton was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as "Camelton" after the nearby Camels Creek. The name was later changed to Campton. The town was officially incorporated in 1820.
In the early 1800s, Campton was a thriving center of commerce and industry. It was home to several mills, a tannery, and a distillery. The town also had a large number of stores and shops.
