Calvert City is a city located in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated along the Tennessee River and is part of the Paducah, Kentucky metropolitan area. The population was 2,837 at the 2010 census.

History

Calvert City was founded in 1854 by William Calvert, a local landowner. The city was named after him and was incorporated in 1872. The city was originally a small farming community, but it grew rapidly after the completion of the Tennessee Valley Authority's Kentucky Dam in 1944. The dam created Kentucky Lake, which provided a large source of hydroelectric power and recreational opportunities.

Geography

Calvert City is located at 36°51'45" North, 88°37'45" West (36.8624, -88.6291). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.

The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
