Calvert City Summary
Calvert City is a city located in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated along the Tennessee River and is part of the Paducah, Kentucky metropolitan area. The population was 2,837 at the 2010 census.
History
Calvert City was founded in 1854 by William Calvert, a local landowner. The city was named after him and was incorporated in 1872. The city was originally a small farming community, but it grew rapidly after the completion of the Tennessee Valley Authority's Kentucky Dam in 1944. The dam created Kentucky Lake, which provided a large source of hydroelectric power and recreational opportunities.
Geography
Calvert City is located at 36°51'45" North, 88°37'45" West (36.8624, -88.6291). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Calvert City is home to several large industrial plants, including a chemical plant, a paper mill, and a steel mill. These plants provide a significant portion of the city's economic base. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,837 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 690.2 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 286.2 per square mile (110.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
