Wolfe County is located in the Eastern Coal Field region of Kentucky. The county is located in the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Cumberland Plateau. The county is bordered by Breathitt County to the north, Powell County to the east, Menifee County to the south, and Morgan County to the west. The county is approximately 545 square miles in size and is the second largest county in Kentucky.
The terrain of Wolfe County is mostly mountainous and heavily forested. The highest point in the county is Pilot Knob, which has an elevation of 2,890 feet. The county is drained by the Red River, which flows through the county from north to south.
The county is home to several state parks, including Natural Bridge State Resort Park, Red River Gorge Geological Area, and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park.
