Martin County is a county located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,929. The county seat is Inez. The county was formed in 1820 from parts of Floyd and Lawrence counties and named for Col. John M. Martin, a soldier in the War of 1812.
Geography
Martin County is located in the Eastern Coal Field region of Kentucky. The county is located in the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Big Sandy River watershed. The county is bordered by Johnson County to the north, Lawrence County to the east, Floyd County to the south, and Pike County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 439 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles (0.5%) is water.
The county is divided into two distinct regions by the Tug Fork River. The western portion of the county is hilly and is part of the Appalachian Plateau.
