Lewis County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,085. The county seat is Vanceburg. The county was formed in 1806 and named for Meriwether Lewis, the explorer.
Geography
Lewis County is located in the northeastern part of Kentucky, along the Ohio River. It is bordered by Mason County to the north, Carter County to the east, Elliott County to the south, and Greenup County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4.2 square miles (1.0%) is water.
The county is located in the Eastern Coal Field region of the state. The landscape is mostly rolling hills, with some flat areas along the Ohio River. The county is drained by the Little Sandy River and the Ohio River.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 14,085 people, 5,717 households, and 3,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 32 people per square mile. There were 6,541 housing units at an average density of 15 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.7% White, 0.9% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. 0.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
