Bancroft Summary

Bancroft is a small unincorporated community located in the western part of Kentucky, in the United States. It is situated in the county of McLean, and is part of the Owensboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Bancroft was estimated to be around 1,000 in the year 2000.

History

The area that is now Bancroft was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from Virginia. The settlement was originally known as “Bancroft’s Station”, named after the first settler, William Bancroft. The settlement was located on the banks of the Green River, and was a popular stop for travelers and traders.
In 1854, the settlement was officially incorporated as the town of Bancroft. The town was named after William Bancroft, and was the first town in McLean County. The town quickly grew, and by the late 1800s, it had become a thriving community with a population of over 1,000.
The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a gristmill. The town also had a post office, a school, and several churches.
