Kearns Summary

Kearns is a city located in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The population was 35,731 at the 2010 census.

History

Kearns was originally settled in 1848 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by John Kearns. The area was originally known as Kearnsville, and was later renamed to Kearns. The city was incorporated in 1936.

Geography

Kearns is located at 40°41'17" North, 112°1'17" West (40.6879, -112.0214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Kearns is home to several large employers, including the University of Utah, Intermountain Healthcare, and the Salt Lake City International Airport. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 35,731 people, 11,845 households, and 8,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,303.3 people per square mile (1,660.2/km2). There were 12,845 housing units at an average density of 1,541.3 per square mile (595.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 19.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.2% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.48.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
