Smyrna Summary

Smyrna, Tennessee is a town located in Rutherford County, Tennessee, United States. It is located about 30 miles southeast of Nashville and is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 39,974, making it the largest town in Rutherford County.

History

Smyrna was founded in 1810 by William Lytle, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after the ancient city of Smyrna in Asia Minor. The town was incorporated in 1869 and was the first town in Rutherford County to be incorporated.
In the late 19th century, Smyrna was a major center for the production of cotton and tobacco. The town was also home to several large factories, including a cotton mill, a tobacco factory, and a shoe factory.
In the early 20th century, Smyrna was a major center for the production of automobiles. The town was home to the Dort Motor Car Company, which produced the Dort automobile from 1915 to 1924.

Geography

Smyrna is located at 35°59'N 86°33'W (35.983, -86.550). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.7 km2), of which 24.1 square miles (62.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (0.41%) is water.

Economy

Smyrna is home to several large employers, including Nissan North America, which has a large manufacturing plant in the town. Other major employers include Amazon, Bridgestone, and Ingram Content Group.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 39,974 people, 15,845 households, and 11,068 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,655.2 people per square mile (637.2/km2). There were 16,845 housing units at an average density of 697.3 per square mile (269.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 15,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,837, and the median income for a family was $53,837. Males had a median income of $37,837 versus $27,837 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,837. About 6.7% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.7% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
