Hornsby Summary

Hornsby is a small town located in Fayette County, Tennessee. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state, approximately 30 miles east of Memphis. The town has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Memphis metropolitan area.

History

Hornsby was founded in 1837 by William Hornsby, a former soldier in the War of 1812. He purchased the land from the Chickasaw Indians and named the town after himself. The town was incorporated in 1845 and was the first town in Fayette County.
In the late 19th century, Hornsby was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several cotton gins, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a post office, a bank, and several stores.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it. The population decreased and many of the businesses closed. In the 1950s, the town was revitalized when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built a dam nearby. The dam created a lake, which brought in tourists and new businesses.

Geography

Hornsby is located in southwestern Fayette County, approximately 30 miles east of Memphis. The town is situated on the banks of the Wolf River, which flows through the town. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.
The climate in Hornsby is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is around 65°F (18°C). The average annual precipitation is around 45 inches (114 cm).
