Tusculum Summary
Tusculum is a small town located in Greene County, Tennessee, United States. It is situated along the Nolichucky River, approximately 15 miles northeast of Greeneville, the county seat. The population of Tusculum was 2,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Tusculum was founded in 1794 by Revolutionary War veteran Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs, who named the town after the ancient Roman city of Tusculum. Meigs was the first postmaster of the town, and he also served as the first mayor. The town was incorporated in 1817.
Tusculum was the site of the first college in Tennessee, Tusculum College, which was founded in 1794. The college was originally a Presbyterian school, but it is now a private, four-year liberal arts college.
Geography
Tusculum is located at 36°14'25" North, 82°45'17" West (36.240278, -82.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
Tusculum is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and several restaurants. The town is also home to Tusculum College, which is the oldest college in Tennessee. The college provides jobs for many of the town's residents.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,288.2 people per square mile (496.7/km²). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 527.2 per square mile (203.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.
There were 1,093 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the town, the population was spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 24.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,845. About 11.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
