Oakland Summary

Oakland is a city located in Fayette County, Tennessee, United States. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area and is located about 25 miles east of downtown Memphis. The population was 10,945 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Oakland was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as "Oak Grove" and was later renamed "Oakland" in 1854. The town was incorporated in 1858 and was the first town in Fayette County to be incorporated.
Oakland was a major stop on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, which ran through the town from 1857 to 1871. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the area.
Oakland was also the site of a major Civil War battle in 1862. The Battle of Oakland was fought between Union and Confederate forces and resulted in a Confederate victory.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
