Jonesborough Summary

Jonesborough is a town located in Washington County, Tennessee, United States. It is the county seat of Washington County and is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region. The population of Jonesborough was 5,975 at the 2010 census.

History

Jonesborough was founded in 1779 by North Carolina legislator and surveyor William Bean, who is considered the first permanent settler of Tennessee. Bean named the town after his friend, North Carolina Congressman, Willie Jones. Jonesborough was the first capital of the State of Franklin, a short-lived independent state that existed from 1784 to 1788. The town was also the capital of the State of Tennessee from 1796 to 1819.

Geography

Jonesborough is located at 36°20'25"N 82°30'17"W (36.340250, -82.504700). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Jonesborough is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The town is also home to the International Storytelling Center, which hosts the annual National Storytelling Festival.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,077 people, 2,093 households, and 1,323 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,213.2 people per square mile (468.9/km2). There were 2,269 housing units at an average density of 545.2 per square mile (210.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.90% White, 1.90% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.20% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $40,917. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,917. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
