Geography

Fayetteville is located at 35°7′25″N 86°35′17″W (35.123611, -86.588333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all land.

History

Fayetteville was founded in 1809 and named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero of the American Revolution. The city was incorporated in 1824 and has been the county seat of Lincoln County since 1809.
Fayetteville was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1863, the Battle of Fayetteville. The battle was fought between Union and Confederate forces and resulted in a Union victory.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
