Fayetteville is located at 35°7′25″N 86°35′17″W (35.123611, -86.588333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all land.
History
Fayetteville was founded in 1809 and named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero of the American Revolution. The city was incorporated in 1824 and has been the county seat of Lincoln County since 1809.
Fayetteville was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1863, the Battle of Fayetteville. The battle was fought between Union and Confederate forces and resulted in a Union victory.

The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
