Farragut Summary
Farragut, Tennessee is a town located in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 20,676 at the 2010 census.
History
Farragut was founded in 1788 by Revolutionary War veteran and statesman, Admiral David Farragut. The town was named in his honor and was incorporated in 1871. Farragut was the first town in Tennessee to be named after a naval hero.
Farragut was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1863. The Battle of Campbell's Station was fought between Union and Confederate forces. The Union forces were victorious and the town was spared from destruction.
Geography
Farragut is located at 35°52'45"N 84°7'45"W (35.879167, -84.129028). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (0.72%) is water.
Economy
Farragut is home to several large employers, including the University of Tennessee Medical Center, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 20,676 people, 8,072 households, and 5,845 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,859.2 people per square mile (717.7/km2). There were 8,541 housing units at an average density of 767.3 per square mile (296.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 90.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 8,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $68,945, and the median income for a family was $77,837. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $37,945 for females. The per capita income for the town was $31,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
