Bartlett, Tennessee is a city located in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. It is a suburb of Memphis and is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The population was 54,613 at the 2010 census, making it the largest suburb in Shelby County.

History

Bartlett was founded in 1829 and named for Major Gabriel M. Bartlett, a veteran of the War of 1812. The town was incorporated in 1866 and became a city in 1867. The city was originally a rural farming community, but it has grown rapidly since the 1970s.

Geography

Bartlett is located in the southeastern corner of Shelby County, at 35°13'N 89°50'W (35.2179, -89.8333). It is bordered to the north by Memphis, to the east by Germantown, to the south by Arlington, and to the west by Lakeland.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.6 square miles (63.7 km2), of which 24.5 square miles (63.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (0.41%) is water.

Bartlett is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. The city is home to several large employers, including FedEx, International Paper, and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 54,613 people, 20,743 households, and 15,068 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,235.2 people per square mile (863.3/km2). There were 22,068 housing units at an average density of 899.3 per square mile (347.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 20,743 households, out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,976, and the median income for a family was $71,817. Males had a median income of $50,819 versus $35,836 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
