History

Arlington was founded in 1876 by William and Mary Jane (Henderson) Smith. The Smiths purchased the land from the estate of William’s father, who had died in 1875. The Smiths named the town after their son, Arlington Smith. The town was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Arlington was a small farming community. The town was home to several cotton gins, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a post office, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1950s, the town began to grow rapidly as Memphis expanded. The population of Arlington increased from 1,000 in 1950 to 11,517 in 2010.

Geography

Arlington is located in the southeastern corner of Shelby County, Tennessee. It is situated on the banks of the Wolf River, which flows through the city. The city is bordered by the cities of Bartlett to the north, Lakeland to the east, and Millington to the south.
The city has a total area of 11.2 square miles, of which 11.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Arlington’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several large manufacturing companies, including International Paper, which produces paper products, and Nucor Steel, which produces steel products.
