Potosi Summary

Potosi is a city located in Washington County, Missouri, United States. It is the county seat of Washington County and is located in the southeastern part of the state. The population was 2,660 at the 2010 census.

History

Potosi was founded in 1763 by Moses Austin, who was granted a land grant from the Spanish government. Austin named the town after the Bolivian city of Potosí, which was known for its silver mines. The town was incorporated in 1837 and became the county seat of Washington County in 1841.
