Newburg Summary

Newburg, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozark Mountains of the state of Missouri. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, just north of the Arkansas border. The town is located in Phelps County, and is part of the Rolla, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Newburg was 1,093.

History

Newburg was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Rolla. The town was named after Newburg, Pennsylvania, the hometown of one of the settlers. The town was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Newburg was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, Newburg began to decline. The mills closed, and the population began to dwindle. By the 1950s, the town had become a virtual ghost town.
In the late 20th century, Newburg began to experience a resurgence. The town was revitalized by the construction of a new highway, which brought new businesses and residents to the area. Today, Newburg is a small but vibrant community.
