Malden Summary
Malden is a city located in Dunklin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,945 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dunklin County.
History
Malden was founded in 1858 by the Rev. John T. Malden, a Methodist minister. The city was named after him. The city was incorporated in 1872.
Malden was a major stop on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The railroad was built in 1872 and ran from St. Louis to Texas. The railroad brought many new businesses to the city, including a cotton gin, a sawmill, and a grist mill.
Malden was also the site of a major Civil War battle in 1862. The Battle of Chalk Bluff was fought between Union and Confederate forces. The Union forces were victorious and the Confederate forces retreated.

Economy
Malden's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant and a Nestle Purina pet food plant.
Agriculture is also an important part of the local economy. The city is home to several large farms, including a large hog farm and a large cotton farm.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 5,945 people, 2,521 households, and 1,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,417.2 people per square mile (546.7/km2). There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 677.2 per square mile (261.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
