Rutland Summary

Rutland is a city located in the state of Vermont in the United States. It is the second largest city in the state and the county seat of Rutland County. The city is situated in the Green Mountains of central Vermont and is located approximately 65 miles (105 km) northwest of the state capital of Montpelier. History

Rutland was first settled in 1770 by settlers from Massachusetts and Connecticut. The town was named after the English county of Rutland. The town was incorporated in 1781 and became a city in 1892.
Rutland was an important center of industry in the 19th century. It was home to several iron foundries, a paper mill, and a large marble quarry. The city was also a major railroad hub, with several railroads connecting it to other parts of the country.
Rutland was also an important center of education in the 19th century. It was home to the first public library in Vermont, as well as the first public high school in the state.

Geography

Rutland is located in the Green Mountains of central Vermont. The city is situated at the confluence of the Otter Creek and the White River. The city is surrounded by mountains, including Killington Peak, which is the second highest peak in Vermont.
The city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Rutland is a major center of industry and commerce in Vermont. The city is home to several large companies, including Omya, a global leader in the production of industrial minerals; Rutland Plywood, a manufacturer of wood products; and Rutland Tool & Die, a manufacturer of precision machined parts.
The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including several restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

As of the 2010 census, there were 16,495 people, 6,945 households, and 4,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,478.3 people per square mile (571.2/km2). There were 7,541 housing units at an average density of 676.3 per square mile (261.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $36,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
