Orleans Summary

Orleans is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Berlin, NH–VT Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The town of Orleans was chartered in 1781 by the Vermont General Assembly. It was named after the city of Orléans in France, in honor of the French assistance during the American Revolutionary War. The town was first settled in 1783 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts.

Geography

Orleans is located in the northeastern corner of Vermont, in the heart of the Northeast Kingdom. It is bordered to the north by Canada, to the east by the Connecticut River, to the south by Barton, and to the west by Irasburg. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 40.2 square miles, of which 39.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.

Economy

The economy of Orleans is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The town is also home to the Orleans Country Club, which offers golf, tennis, and swimming.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 46.2 people per square mile. There were 845 housing units at an average density of 21.2 per square mile.
