Morrisville is a town located in Lamoille County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,026 at the 2010 census. It is the shire town (county seat) of Lamoille County. The town was named after Jacob Morris, an early settler.

Geography

Morrisville is located in the Lamoille Valley, at the confluence of the Lamoille and Winooski Rivers. It is bordered by the towns of Elmore to the north, Wolcott to the east, Hyde Park to the south, and Cambridge to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.3 km2) (0.72%) is water.

History

The area that is now Morrisville was originally inhabited by the Abenaki people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 18th century. The town was chartered in 1780 and named after Jacob Morris, an early settler.
In the 19th century, Morrisville was an important stop on the stagecoach route between Montpelier and St. Johnsbury. The town was also the site of a major Civil War battle in 1864.

Morrisville is home to several small businesses, including a number of restaurants, a grocery store, a hardware store, and a variety of other retail stores. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a metal fabrication plant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,026 people, 845 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 182.7 people per square mile (70.6/km2). There were 902 housing units at an average density of 81.3 per square mile (31.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
