Jericho Summary

Jericho, Vermont is a small town located in Chittenden County, in the northwestern part of the state. It is bordered by the towns of Underhill, Richmond, Williston, and Bolton. The town has a population of 5,009 as of the 2010 census, and is part of the Burlington-South Burlington metropolitan area.

History

The area that is now Jericho was originally inhabited by the Abenaki people, who called it “Pahquioque”, meaning “place of the wild onions”. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1763, and the town was officially incorporated in 1787. The town was named after the biblical city of Jericho, and was originally part of the town of Williston.
In the 19th century, Jericho was a rural farming community, with a few small mills and factories. The town was also home to a number of quarries, which provided stone for many of the buildings in the area. In the late 19th century, the town began to grow, as the railroad came through and the population increased.
