Wildwood Summary

Wildwood, Missouri is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The city is located in the western part of the county, and is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 35,517.

Geography

Wildwood is located at 38°35′17″N 90°35′2″W (38.588, -90.584). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.62%) is water.

History

Wildwood was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The city was originally known as Grubville, but was later renamed Wildwood in 1892. The city was incorporated in 1995.

Economy

Wildwood is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including the St. Louis County Government, the St. Louis County Police Department, and the St. Louis County Fire Department.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 35,517 people, 13,845 households, and 9,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,203.3 people per square mile (851.2/km2). There were 14,845 housing units at an average density of 919.2 per square mile (354.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 13,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $68,945, and the median income for a family was $81,945. Males had a median income of $60,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $32,945. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
