West Line Summary

West Line is a small city located in Clay County, Missouri, United States. It is situated on the western edge of the Kansas City metropolitan area, approximately 20 miles north of downtown Kansas City. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

West Line was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Liberty. The town was named after the nearby West Line Railroad, which ran from Liberty to Kansas City. The railroad was built in 1869 and was the first railroad to connect Liberty to Kansas City.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, and by the early 20th century, West Line had become a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable.
In the early 20th century, West Line was a popular destination for tourists, who came to enjoy the town's natural beauty and its proximity to Kansas City. The town was also known for its annual Fourth of July celebration, which included a parade, fireworks, and a carnival.

Geography

West Line is located at 39°14'25" North, 94°25'45" West (39.240278, -94.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

West Line's economy is largely based on agriculture and light industry. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
The town is also home to a number of small manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a machine shop.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,148.6 per square mile (444.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
