Geography

Vista is located at 38°37′17″N 90°25′17″W (38.621445, -90.421445). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9sqmi, all land.

History

Vista was founded in 1876 by a group of German immigrants. The city was originally known as Germania, but the name was changed to Vista in 1883. The city was incorporated in 1891.

Economy

Vista is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The city also has a few industrial businesses, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication shop.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,093.2 people per square mile (1,192.2/km2). There were 1,133 housing units at an average density of 1,228.2 per square mile (474.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
