Overland Summary

Overland is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 16,062 at the 2010 census. It is a suburb of St. Louis and is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

Geography

Overland is located at 38°39′17″N 90°21′45″W (38.654722, -90.362500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.90 square miles (12.69 km2), all land.

History

The area that is now Overland was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as "Germantown" and was later renamed "Overland" in 1891. The name was chosen to honor the Overland Stage Line, which ran through the area.
The city was incorporated in 1895 and has grown steadily since then. In the early 1900s, the city was home to a number of factories, including a brickyard, a brewery, and a canning factory.

Overland is home to a number of businesses, including a number of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing businesses, including a printing company, a plastics manufacturer, and a metal fabrication company.

The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 6,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
