Normandy Summary
Normandy is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 8,602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Normandy was first settled in the early 1800s by French and German immigrants. The city was originally known as "Gumbo Flats" due to the abundance of gumbo clay in the area. In 1876, the area was renamed Normandy after the French city of the same name.
In the early 1900s, the city began to grow rapidly as a result of the construction of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad. This allowed for easy access to the city from St. Louis and other nearby cities.
In the 1950s, the city experienced a period of rapid growth as a result of the construction of Interstate 70. This allowed for easy access to the city from St. Louis and other nearby cities.
Geography
Normandy is located at 38°44'25" North, 90°20'17" West (38.740278, -90.338333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Normandy's economy is largely based on the service industry. The city is home to several restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a steel mill and a paper mill.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 8,602 people, 3,541 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,039.2 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 3,845 housing units at an average density of 917.2 per square mile (354.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 25.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
