Nixa Summary
Nixa is a city located in Christian County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 19,022 at the 2010 census.
History
Nixa was founded in 1883 by William Nix, a former Confederate soldier. The town was originally called Nixa Station, and was located on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. The town was officially incorporated in 1890.
Geography
Nixa is located at 37°00'25" North, 93°20'17" West (37.006944, -93.338056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), all land.
Economy
Nixa is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several large employers, including Nixa Public Schools, CoxHealth, and the City of Nixa.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 19,022 people, 7,541 households, and 5,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,711.2 people per square mile (661.2/km2). There were 8,072 housing units at an average density of 722.2 per square mile (279.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 7,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36.7 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
