Newark Summary

Newark is a small city located in the state of Missouri, in the United States. It is situated in the northwest corner of the state, in the Ozark Mountains. The city is located in the county of Newton, and is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Newark was 1,845.

Geography

Newark is located at 36°51'25" North, 94°17'45" West (36.856944, -94.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The city is situated in the Ozark Mountains, and is surrounded by rolling hills and wooded areas. The city is located near the Elk River, which is a tributary of the White River.

History

The area that is now Newark was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The city was officially founded in 1883, and was named after Newark, Ohio. The city was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, the city was a major center for the timber industry. The city was also home to several coal mines, which provided employment for many of the city's residents.
In the 1950s, the city began to experience a decline in population, as many of the city's residents moved away in search of better job opportunities. The city's population has remained relatively stable since then.

There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945.
