Maryland Heights Summary

Maryland Heights is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. It is a suburb of St. Louis and is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. The population was 27,472 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Maryland Heights was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The area was originally known as "Fenton's Settlement" after the first settler, John Fenton. The area was later renamed "Maryland Heights" in 1877, after the state of Maryland.
The city was incorporated in 1985, and has since grown to become one of the largest suburbs of St. Louis.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Maryland Heights is home to several large businesses, including Express Scripts, Monsanto, and MasterCard. The city is also home to the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, which hosts a variety of concerts and other events.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 27,472 people, 11,845 households, and 7,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,704.2 people per square mile (657.7/km2). There were 12,717 housing units at an average density of 790.2 per square mile (305.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $64,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
