Geography

Maplewood is located at 38°35′45″N 90°19′45″W (38.5958, -90.3292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.17 square miles (5.62 km2), all land.

History

Maplewood was founded in 1892 by a group of German immigrants who named the town after the maple trees that grew in the area. The town was incorporated in 1908 and has since grown to become a vibrant and diverse community.

There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
