Kirkwood Summary

Kirkwood, Missouri is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. It is a suburb of St. Louis and is located approximately 15 miles west of the city. The population of Kirkwood was 27,540 at the 2010 census.

History

Kirkwood was founded in 1853 by James Pugh Kirkwood, a civil engineer and surveyor who had worked on the Pacific Railroad. He purchased land near the intersection of Manchester Road and Big Bend Boulevard and laid out the town. The town was named after him and incorporated in 1859.
Kirkwood was a popular stop on the Pacific Railroad, and the town grew rapidly. By the late 19th century, it had become a popular summer resort for St. Louisans. The town was also known for its many churches and schools.
In the early 20th century, Kirkwood began to experience a decline in population as people moved to the suburbs of St. Louis. The town was hit hard by the Great Depression and World War II. After the war, the town began to experience a resurgence as people moved back to the area.

Geography

Kirkwood is located at 38°34′N 90°24′W (38.567, -90.400). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Kirkwood is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including the St. Louis County government, the St. Louis County Library, and the St. Louis County Police Department.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 27,540 people, 11,845 households, and 7,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,364.2 people per square mile (1,299.3/km2). There were 12,717 housing units at an average density of 1,547.2 per square mile (597.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 6.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $76,845. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $37,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $33,945. About 3.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
