Gladstone Summary

Gladstone, Missouri is a city located in Clay County, Missouri, United States. It is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The population was 26,365 at the 2010 census.

History

Gladstone was founded in 1887 by William G. Nelson, a former mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. The city was named after the British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. The city was incorporated in 1952.

Geography

Gladstone is located at 39°14′45″N 94°33′17″W (39.245833, -94.554722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.90 square miles (23.09 km2), of which 8.87 square miles (22.99 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.

Economy

Gladstone has a diverse economy, with a mix of retail, manufacturing, and service businesses. The city is home to several large employers, including North Kansas City Hospital, Northland Regional Ambulance District, and the North Kansas City School District.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 26,365 people, 10,845 households, and 6,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,964.3 people per square mile (1,145.2/km2). There were 11,717 housing units at an average density of 1,320.3 per square mile (509.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,845 versus $30,945 for females.
