History
Fenton was founded in 1818 by William Fenton, a settler from Kentucky. The city was originally known as Fentonville, but the name was changed to Fenton in 1837. The city was incorporated in 1876.
Fenton was a small farming community until the 1950s, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to St. Louis. The city has since become a popular bedroom community for St. Louis, with many residents commuting to the city for work.
Geography
Fenton is located at 38°31′17″N 90°30′17″W (38.521445, -90.504700). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), all land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,022 people, 1,619 households, and 1,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 958.2 people per square mile (370.2/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 411.2 per square mile (158.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
