History

The area that is now Ellisville was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as "Franklin", but was later renamed "Ellisville" in honor of Colonel Benjamin Ellis, a prominent local landowner. The town was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Ellisville was a popular destination for wealthy St. Louisans looking to escape the city. The town was home to several large estates, including the estate of William Clark, a prominent St. Louis businessman.

Geography

Ellisville is located at 38°37′17″N 90°33′17″W (38.6214, -90.5548). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Ellisville is home to several large employers, including the headquarters of the Schnucks grocery store chain, the headquarters of the Edward Jones financial services firm, and the headquarters of the Emerson Electric Company. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 705.3 per square mile (272.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
