Polk County, Missouri is located in the southwestern corner of the state and is bordered by Cedar County to the north, Dallas County to the east, Webster County to the south, and Barry County to the west. The county seat is Bolivar, and the largest city is Humansville. The county was organized in 1835 and named after James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States.

Polk County is located in the Ozark Plateau region of Missouri. The county is mostly rural, with rolling hills and valleys. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 1,072 feet. The county is drained by the Pomme de Terre River, which flows through the center of the county. There were 11,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.00.
