Bridgeton Summary

Bridgeton, Missouri is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 11,550 at the 2010 census. Bridgeton is located in the northwest corner of St. Louis County, just south of the Missouri River. It is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

History

Bridgeton was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The town was originally known as "La Riviere des Peres," or "The River of the Fathers," and was named after the nearby Missouri River. The town was officially incorporated in 1877.
In the late 1800s, Bridgeton was a thriving agricultural community, with many farms and orchards. The town was also home to several brickyards, which supplied bricks for many of the buildings in St. Louis.
In the early 1900s, Bridgeton began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to St. Louis. The town was annexed by the city of St. Louis in 1910, and the population grew to over 10,000 by the 1950s.

Bridgeton is located at 38°44'25" North, 90°25'17" West (38.740278, -90.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.

As of the 2010 census, there were 11,550 people, 4,717 households, and 3,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,411.2 people per square mile (545.3/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 619.3 per square mile (239.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
