Geography

Berkeley is located at 38°44'25" North, 90°19'17" West (38.740278, -90.321389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

History

Berkeley was founded in 1875 by a group of German immigrants. The city was named after the English philosopher and statesman George Berkeley. The city was incorporated in 1891.

Economy

Berkeley is home to several large employers, including Boeing, Emerson Electric, and Express Scripts. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,978 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,139.2 people per square mile (824.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 25.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.04.
